Hennef Way will be the last Air Quality Management Area needed in Cherwell
03/02/2026

Things are improving but the busy main route is still above target levels
Nitrogen dioxide levels remain high on Hennef Way in Banbury, despite levels in other areas of the district having fallen.
Cherwell District Council has an air quality objective of 40µg/m3 (micrograms per cubic meter of air) or less, but Hennef Way remained at 54 during 2024 – the latest data available. The good news is this is down from 57.5 the previous year and continues an overall downwards trend.
But the busy route on the northern side of town remains above target thresholds and is now the only place in the district where this is the case.
An Air Quality Management Area was declared for Hennef Way in 2011. The district’s only other remaining Air Quality Management Area, in Kings End and Queens Avenue in Bicester, is set to be revoked at a meeting of the Council’s Executive tonight.
Levels are measured across our area over a calendar year using diffusion tubes.
In March 2024 the council approved an air quality action plan to address air quality in places such as Hennef Way. Steps included introducing a Banbury Park and Ride bus service around the M40 junction, a lift share scheme and improved cycle routes on Overthorpe Way.
