Historic artefacts in Bodicote House saved from skip

The theme of Mayor Kieron Mallon’s year is Banbury’s history and traditions
A Banbury councillor has saved a number of historic items which were abandoned in Bodicote House from being consigned to a skip.
After Cherwell District Council vacated their home of 51 years, Councillor Kieron Mallon – who is the Town Mayor in Banbury – was concerned as to what officers may have left in the building which was of local, historical significance.
He arranged access to the building so he could check what artefacts may have been left behind.
Around the abandoned offices, which the council first occupied in 1974, he found some old photos, an historic chair and a large aerial photo of Banbury. These all predate Cherwell’s formation and have now been saved and moved to Banbury Town Hall.
Councillor Mallon said: “I knew of the aerial photo as I had admired it in the planning dept. It is clearly from before Cherwell was formed so must have belonged to the Borough Council.
“The Oak Chair, which has deteriorated and in a poor state was, I believe either a Banbury Borough or Banbury Rural District Council chair, both councils had their offices in Banbury town centre.
“I have stated that the theme of my year as Mayor would be our history and traditions so I felt that if I didn’t save them no one would. Its great to rescue a bit of Banbury history”.
Its intended that both the photo frame and chair will be refurbished back to their original condition.
