Hook Norton Brewery welcomes Brigadier
02/03/2022
The two-and-a-half-year-old will be trained to pull the brewery’s drays
The Hook Norton Brewery has a new team member – a shire horse called Brigadier. The two-and-a-half-year-old joins two other working horses undertaking the brewery’s traditional dray deliveries.
The brewery announced the death of a former working shire horse, Lucas, back on January 17.
Brigadier was purchased from Cornwall and will spend time meeting the public before being trained to pull the brewery drays.
Head Coachman, Nicholas Carter said: “We’re incredibly excited to welcome Brigadier to our team of working heavy horses. His exceptional quiet nature and size makes him an ideal horse to continue keeping traditions alive and ensuring our working horses legacy.
“Having been given permission from the board of directors to purchase three more Shires, it’s by far the biggest commitment to the horses since their return to the Brewery in the 1985. It’s an exciting time for us all and we look forward to watching him grow and take over the working commitments in due course.”
Hook Norton Brewery has been granted status as an approved Shire Horse Society centre, marking their commitment to the survival of the breed. The brewery will also be submitting a horse for judging at the National Shire Horse Show next week.
Working horses have been an integral part of the brewery since it was founded in 1849. Deliveries are normally made between Wednesday and Friday covering a 5 mile radius from Hook Norton.
The brewery is one of three breweries still delivering using a traditional shire horse and dray.

Met Brigadier and Nick Carter in Newark Market Place today. Found both to be very friendly and informative and a great advertisement for the brewery. You must be very proud of them. Without doubt they made my day.
