Hotel seeks permission for storage containers following complaint

The units are used to store items which the hotel wants to protect and safeguard
The Banbury House Hotel has applied for retrospective planning permission for two storage containers behind the hotel.
The units are already in situ without planning permission, but that consent is now being sought following a complaint to Cherwell District Council’s Planning Enforcement Team. They requested the submission of an application for temporary permission for the two containers. In their planning submission the applicant says the council indicated that an application seeking the permanent placement of the containers was unlikely to be seen favourably, due to the impact to the setting of the listed building, which is within a conservation area.
Currently the containers are used to store furniture and other items from the dining room, lounge, bar and bedrooms which the hotel says it wishes to “protect and safeguard”. They were moved from the main building following the recommendation of a Fire Safety Assessor to reduce the risk of fire.
The Banbury House Hotel has been closed to the public since January 1, 2022 – the details of this closure have been supplied to the Council in a confidential accompanying letter.
The hotel is a mid-19th century Grade II listed building with 64 bedrooms on three floors.
The public have until August 7 to comment on the application.
