Huge success for Banbury Cricket Club at Grassroots Awards
23/08/2023
Younger players, volunteers and a club legend are all honoured
Ten members of Banbury Cricket Club have been named as winners at this year’s Grassroots Cricket Awards. The club has also won an award for its moves towards tackling climate change.
The awards are organised by Oxfordshire Cricket and seek to reward and recognise volunteers across the county who have made a difference to their club or community group.
Craig Haupt won the Lifetime Achiever award. The highly-respected South African born left hander became the first player to reach 10,000 runs in the Home Counties Premier League back in 2018. The player and youth coach is named by many at Banbury Cricket Club as a “legend”.
17-year-old Freddie Crook was named the winner of the Game Changer award, which is aimed at those aged 17 to 25 who have made a difference in the game. Freddie is one of the club’s youth coaches.
Banbury Women’s 1st XI captain and youth coach Bethany Bidwell won the Growing The Game award, which recognises a person who goes above and beyond to support their club and help increase the number of games played.
Several Banbury Cricket Club members won Unsung Hero awards including Matt Miller (youth coach, Sunday captain and umpire), John Woodhead (President), Olly Badger (volunteer grounds team member), and youth coaches Fred Price, Amy Acton, Matt Acton and David Cronin
The club won the Tackling Climate Change award for the installation of their in-roof photovoltaic solar panels.
Club Secretary Jack Lambden said: “It is an extremely proud moment for everyone involved with Banbury Cricket Club to see such a large number of our volunteers recognised for their selfless contributions.
“We are incredibly lucky to have so many passionate volunteers who ensure that cricket is accessible for all at the club.
“On behalf of Banbury Cricket Club, we thank them for their efforts; if it wasn’t for people like our award winners, then clubs like ours simply wouldn’t be successful!”
The winners will receive their awards on Sunday September 17 during Finals Day at Wormsley.
