Cherwell District Council stands ready to help house refugee families from Ukraine

Political differences have been put to one side as Cherwell’s councillors come together to pledge the area’s commitment to playing our part offering shelter to those fleeing the war in Ukraine.

A joint letter has been sent to the Home Secretary by the Leader of the Council, Conservative Barry Wood, and the Leader of the Opposition, Labour’s Sean Woodcock.   In the document the councillors tell Priti Patel that Cherwell District Council stands ready to help house refugee families from Ukraine.

The letter says: “At our recent Council Meeting there was, as you would hope and expect, a universal condemnation of the illegal invasion of the Sovereign State of Ukraine.

“Cherwell District Council stands ready to help house refugee families from that now war torn country as we have done previously for those from Syria and Afghanistan.

“We do not yet know what national or regional arrangements will be made, but would request that your Officials note our offer and contact the Council Chief Executive at the appropriate time.”

At a full meeting of Cherwell District Council last week an emergency motion on the crisis was backed unanimously across all parties.

The Lead member for housing, Councillor Lucinda Wing, told the meeting that she would be meeting with housing officers to ask how they would be “poised and ready” to support Ukrainian refugees, when they arrived.
