Kerbside collection for real Christmas trees begins this week

The trees end up as compost for farmers’ fields
Today’s the day Christmas decorations are traditionally taken down ahead of twelfth night tonight.
Once again this year, for the next couple of weeks North Oxfordshire residents can recycle real Christmas trees at the kerbside.
Cherwell District Council’s waste and recycling crews will be collecting the trees on people’s normal recycling collection day – and you don’t need a garden waste subscription to take advantage of the scheme.
Trees can be left next to the blue recycling bin, but any over five feet tall do need to be cut in half.
For those subscribing to the garden waste service trees can be placed in the brown bin.
The service is available until Friday January 16.
Councillor Ian Middleton, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, said: “For many, a real Christmas tree brings that festive feeling to their home. Choosing a living tree that can be replanted and enjoyed year after year is the most sustainable option, but with millions of cut trees sold annually, it’s vital to dispose of them responsibly.
“The simplest way to give your tree a second life is to recycle it right from home by just leaving it out for collection alongside your blue bin.”
Collected trees will be taken to a dedicated site in Ardley, where they’ll be composted at high temperatures before being redistributed to farmers as compost.
