Kids summer reading challenge begins this weekend

The initiative is designed to make reading fun and accessible during the school holidays
Children are being encouraged to take part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, which starts this weekend.
It a free initiative aimed at keeping young readers engaged during the school summer holidays.
This year’s challenge is called ‘Story Garden’ and children can join in at Oxfordshire’s libraries or online, where they can discover new books, collect stickers, and enjoy nature-inspired activities. Those who complete the challenge will receive a medal, certificate, and entry into a prize draw.
For children under four there’s a special Mini Challenge with their own collector’s folder and rewards.
Councillor Neil Fawcett, Deputy Leader of Oxfordshire County Council, said: “The 2025 Summer Reading Challenge is a celebration of adventure, fantasy and the great outdoors. We hope to inspire children throughout Oxfordshire to tap into a world of imagination through reading and exploring the magical connection between storytelling and nature.”
National statistics show that only one in three children enjoying reading, so this initiative is designed to make it fun and accessible over the school break.
The Summer Reading Challenge runs until September 6.
