Late night opening at Alkerton Waste and Recycling Centre no longer financially viable

Thursday late night opening through the summer at the Household Waste and Recycling Centre in Alkerton will not return this year. Oxfordshire County Council says it is no longer financially viable.
Alkerton, and the county’s other six household waste recycling centres, have in previous years remained open until 8pm on a Thursday between April and September.
The decision comes as local authorities hit the headlines for struggling to balance the books.
Councils can no longer charge for the disposal of small quantities of DIY waste. At the same time costs have doubled for disposing of persistent organic pollutants which have been banned from being placed in landfill. These are often found in upholstered furniture. The extra costs amount to around £1 million a year, which has to be found from savings in other areas.
Councillor Pete Sudbury, Deputy Leader of Oxfordshire County Council with Responsibility for Climate Change, Environment and Future Generations, said: “We realise this decision will disappoint some people but unfortunately it is not financially viable to keep it going. However, users should remember that all of our HWRCs will remain open from 8am – 5pm seven days a week, 362 days a year, to meet everyone’s waste and recycling needs.”
