The NFU invited nominations for community farming heroes
Today is Back British Farming Day, with a new survey revealing the public have once again voted farmers as the second most respected profession in the UK – just behind nursing.
One local farming family – the Fenemores from Clifton – have been highlighted by the National Farmers Union (NFU) for the work they are doing to showcase the industry and local food production. They were nominated by one of the Back British Farming campaign supporters.
Chris, Naomi, Ben and Tom run the farm together and are active members of their community.
Their nominee wrote: “This is a farming family of heroes, as Chris works the farm with his wife, Naomi, and sons, Ben and Tom.
“Chris and Ben are on call fire fighters, and Tom has trained as a butcher. During Covid, Chris and Naomi started a community shop selling their meat, eggs and honey, and now sell at the local farmers’ market too.
“They put up signs around the farm to inform the public about the crops they grow and help to clear roads from snow and fallen trees during bad weather. They welcome the annual 4 Farms Challenge mostly held on their land, raising money for charity.”
The family’s work has been highlighted in a video released by the National Farmers Union.
On hearing of their nomination Chris said: “We don’t consider ourselves to be farming heroes, we just love what we do. We love farming, producing food and being able to help our community. I think that farms are an important part of communities and it’s important that we get out there and do our bit.
“I’m exceptionally proud to be a British farmer, we produce the best food in the world and in such a positive way that helps and supports the environment.”
Representatives from The National Farmers’ Union will be meeting MPs in Westminster today, calling on the government to recognise and reflect on the public support for the farming sector, and urging them to back policies that value domestic food production and farming’s environmental delivery.
NFU President Tom Bradshaw said: “Back British Farming Day is about recognising the value of our farmers – not just for the food they produce, but for the role they play in our communities, our economy and our environment. And clearly, the public is behind us.
“Over the past decade, NFU campaigns have helped deliver landmark changes for farmers, including the introduction of ‘Buy British’ buttons on eight major supermarket websites and driving the launch of No. 10’s Farm to Fork Summit. More than a quarter of a million people have also recently backed the NFU’s petition calling on the government to protect family farms from the family farm tax.”
