Longford Park consortium give update on remaining areas of work
27/06/2023
The main spine road will be resurfaced this year, but other areas are less certain
People living on Longford Park can expect the main spine road through their estate to be resurfaced before the end of the year. The Longford Park Consortium has told Banbury FM that work will start at the end of this month and be organised in a way to minimise disruption.
Any minor remedial works required to the drains will be completed as part of the road resurfacing works.
The Longford Park consortium, comprising Taylor Wimpey, Barratt Homes and the Vistry Group, also confirmed that landscaping works to the country park will be completed by the end of July.
However, there is less clarity as to a number of other features that were promised as part of the original planning application.
The consortium say they have marketed the promised Canal Basin since 2016 – one of the Section 106 obligations they agreed to at the time. As no viable interest has been received it is understood they are planning to exercise an option in the Section 106 agreement to incorporate the area into the country park.
The site allocated for a pub has also been promoted since 2016 and the consortium is continuing to seek a development partner.
A spokesperson for the Longford Park consortium said: “We understand the frustration of residents and would like to assure them that we are committed to completing all outstanding works at Longford Park at the earliest opportunity.
“Following the completion of essential remedial works to the main spine road, resurfacing works will begin at the end of June and we anticipate this will be completed by the end of the year. Landscaping works to the country park will be completed by the end of July.
“We have been marketing the facilities listed in the planning consent including the pub land site and canal basin and we hope to exchange contracts soon with a preferred development partner who will deliver the Local Centre.”
When it was agreed to build Longford Park in 2005, within the original application the plans included retail and employment units on Longford Park Road, just off the main Oxford Road. A health facility and nursery were also promised close to Longford Park Primary School.
In April this year Cherwell District Council agreed to a request from the Longford Park Consortium to remove the requirement for a healthcare site at Longford Park. In the same letter the Council agreed to amendments in the size of the retail and employment units and the nursery and accepted this work should be completed within 5 years of the final versions of the plans being accepted.
