M40 collision leaves local routes struggling
09/11/2023
The crash happened at 4.28pm on Wednesday
The M40 remained closed to southbound traffic through the night and during Thursday breakfast following a serious collision, which saw a lorry cross the central reservation. The incident on Wednesday afternoon also left the northbound carriageway with restrictions.
Police reported the incident as “damage only”.
The collision happened south of junction 11 at Banbury in the countryside section close to Adderbury and Kings Sutton at 4.28pm.
Initially the motorway was closed completely shortly before 5pm when traffic officers arrived at the scene. Two northbound lanes were then reopened within 15 minutes.
The clear up and recovery operation was completed during the evening, but extensive emergency barrier repairs left the southbound carriageway closed.
Local roads around Banbury were affected from early this morning with heavy traffic as drivers sought alternative routes.
One lane was reopened in both directions at 8.10am but the closure of the remaining lane led to long delays for M40 users.
