At 102 Mair still loves knitting and arts and crafts

Being down to earth and taking everything in moderation are a couple of the secrets to a long life, according to a lady who’s just celebrated her 102nd birthday at Anchor’s The Ridings care home in Banbury.

Vera Robson, who’s known as Mair, celebrated at a party with staff and other residents on Tuesday.

Mair was serenaded by a choir from Dashwood Banbury Academy and received flowers and chocolates from loved ones and the care team at The Ridings, where she has lived for six years.

Grandmother of two, Mair was born in Llanelli South Wales where she lived with her parents, three sisters and one brother.  Her father worked in the local tin works and her mother was a dressmaker and housewife.

Mair married at the age of 26 back in 1946 and had one daughter, Beverley. Before she retired, Mair worked as a School Secretary and Personal Assistant to the Head of a large comprehensive school in Essex. She moved to Oxfordshire 27 years ago to be near her daughter when her husband died.

Mair said: “I feel lucky and grateful about turning 102 and my secret to a long life is to live life as it comes and deal with whatever comes your way, be down to earth and take everything in moderation.”

Anna Jakes, care home Manager, said: “We’re delighted to celebrate Mair’s 102nd birthday at Anchor’s The Ridings care home. She’s a wonderful character and we’re all very fond of her! Mair always likes to take part in the activities we’ve got going on here. In particular, she loves knitting and arts and crafts.”
