The work is needed to accommodate increased traffic from housing developments

Major roadworks are about to begin at the Ardley junction of the M40.

From tomorrow (Wednesday) the junction 10 southbound exit slip will be closed every weekday night between 9.30pm and 6am.     One lane of the M40 southbound around the junction will also be coned off.

The aim of the work is to improve safety and traffic flow and reduce pollution.   Oxfordshire County Council is working with National Highways to deliver the work, which is needed to help the road network accommodate increased traffic from housing developments.

During the southbound exit slip closure drivers will be diverted south to junction 9 and then back up the M40 to exit at the northbound junction 10 exit.

The A43 will also be closed overnight periodically, with dates yet to be confirmed.

Councillor Judy Roberts, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Development Strategy, said: “The project is designed to increase the capacity of the A43 Padbury roundabout, improve the safety of the slip road and help to prepare the M40 junction 10 as planned new housing is built in the area.

“When finished, these improvements should help residents, commuters and business travellers move more quickly and safely through the area.”

As part of the work the existing nearside southbound off slip at junction 10 on the immediate approach to the roundabout will be widened and all approaches controlled by smart traffic signals.

All lanes will be open and functioning as normal between 6am and 9.30pm.   Construction is expected to be completed by spring 2025.
