Man not guilty by reason of insanity following Great Bourton incident

Police were called to Garners Field last December

A man from Birmingham has been found not guilty of a number of offences in Great Bourton last December.

Following reports of a domestic disturbance in Garners Field, 49-year-old Inderpal Bansal, who’s from Westfield Road in Smethwick, had been arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and threats to kill.

Six officers went to Great Bourton to deal with the situation at around 4.37pm on December 12.

Yesterday at Oxford Crown Court a jury decided Bansal was not guilty by reason of insanity.

Bansal had also been charged with wounding with intent and causing grievous bodily harm with intent, but this was taken off the indictment during the trial.

Whilst officers were dealing with the incident, an unrelated vehicle collided with two police officers and Bansal on the Southam Road.  All three required hospital treatment.    As is required when a member of the public receives injuries during an incident, Thames Valley Police made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
