A man from Birmingham has been sentenced to a hospital order following an incident in Great Bourton in December 2024.

Following reports of a domestic disturbance in Garners Field, 50-year-old Inderpal Bansal, who’s formerly from Westfield Road in Smethwick, was arrested and later charged with two counts of a possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, along with one count each of affray, threats to kill and sending communication threatening death or serious harm.

Six officers attended the scene and whilst they were dealing with the incident, an unrelated vehicle collided with two of the officers and Bansal.   All three were taken to hospital for treatment.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Paul Morse said: “This was an extremely distressing incident in which two police officers were seriously injured while serving the public.

“The trauma experienced by those involved has been significant. Despite this, all officers have since returned to duty and continue to serve and protect the public with dedication.

“No officer should ever go to work expecting to face harm in the line of duty.”

The hospital order sentence, issued last Friday, follows a jury decision at Oxford Crown Court in August that Bansal was not guilty of the charges he faced by reason of insanity.

Detective Constable Morse added: “The role of the community is vital in helping us prevent violent crime. We need information about those carrying knives in the town.

“If anyone has information about knives or violence in Banbury, please report it via 101 or by making a report on our website.

“Alternatively, for 100% anonymity, you can also call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 with any information.”
