MP adds his support to devolution plans
18/12/2024
“I think everyone would agree that the status quo is not delivering”
Banbury’s MP has joined those welcoming the government’s announcement of the biggest shake-up in local councils for half a century.
The English Devolution White Paper was launched earlier this week outlining structures which could see a new mayor for Oxfordshire and a single tier of local authority taking on the work of both Oxfordshire County and Cherwell District councils.
Sean Woodcock said: “I welcome this opportunity to reform local government so that it is better at delivering growth and supporting the priorities of local communities.
“Despite the best efforts of hard-working councillors, I think everyone would agree that the status quo is not delivering. Whether that’s on housing, town centres or social care, local government is on life support in many areas.
“This offers a chance to fix the foundations of our democracy so that residents can start feeling the benefit.”
In addition to his role as an MP, Mr Woodcock continues to sit as a Labour Councillor for the Banbury Grimsbury and Hightown ward at Cherwell District Council.
The Council’s Liberal Democrat administration is yet to comment on the proposals.
