MP backs vote to introduce proportional representation
04/12/2024
Compass Oxfordshire threw their support behind Mr Woodcock as he supported PR
Banbury’s MP has honoured an election campaign promise to support moves to change our voting system to proportional representation.
Sean Woodcock supported a motion, brought forward by MP Sarah Olney, which proposed the introduction of PR in local and national elections.
The Commons vote for the Motion on Tuesday was narrowly won with 138 for and 136 against.
Ahead of July’s General Election the campaign group Compass Oxfordshire had thrown their support behind Mr Woodcock with the aim of electing MPs who backed changing our voting system.
Mr Woodcock said: “As I stated during the election campaign, I do support changing our electoral system so that more citizens feel that their vote matters.
“So I was pleased to get to vote on this to go forward to second reading. I look forward to seeing more detail on what those changes might look like ahead of that from the Bill’s sponsors.”
The motion will now proceed to its second reading in January.
