MP welcomes move to speed-up phasing out product testing on animals

Banbury’s MP, Sean Woodcock, has welcomed a move to speed-up the phasing out of using animals for product testing.
Mr Woodcock says he has received 100 emails from his constituents about animal testing and welfare since the election. These have been passed on to ministers in the government who have today announced their plan to accelerate the development and adoption of safe and effective alternative methods.
Animals are currently still used to determine the safety of products like life-saving vaccines and the impact chemicals such as pesticides can have on living beings and the environment. Researchers will be supported in seizing on new and developing opportunities to replace using animals.
Mr Woodcock said: “I am delighted that the government has listened to my constituents and is taking strong action to phase out animal testing.
“My constituents love animals, and I do too – as the proud owner of three cats. I know this concerned so many of my constituents and, with too little funding under the Tories, it meant we were missing out on opportunities to do innovative research as well. Under Labour, our aim is to establish the UK as a world leader in developing and adopting alternatives to animal testing.
“Labour’s new strategy will make a huge difference in speeding up our move from animal testing to safe and effective alternatives. Not only will Labour’s plan protect animals, it will ensure we continue to innovate and develop life-saving products while growing the economy.”
The strategy is backed by £75m of funding, including money for a hub that will bring together data, technology and expertise to promote collaboration between researchers and a separate new centre to make the path to regulatory approval for new alternatives as straightforward as possible.
