Elderly man loses life in East Street house fire
23/08/2021
Investigations into the cause of the fire will continue today
Thames Valley Police have confirmed that an elderly man lost his life in a house fire in Banbury’s East Street on Sunday.
Fire crews from three stations were called yesterday to the well-developed fire with reports a person was trapped inside. Multiple calls were made to the emergency services just after midday when the fire was spotted at a property in Banbury’s East Street.
Two crews from Banbury and one from Deddington attended, together with a Turntable Ladder from Warwickshire Fire and Rescue.
When they arrived the crews were faced with a fire which had taken hold in the kitchen at the rear of the property. Thick black smoke was coming from all the ground floor windows.
Fire fighters forced entry through the rear garden and through the front door. Crews wearing breathing apparatus entered the house and with the aid of a thermal image camera quickly extinguished the fire using a high-pressure hose reel jet.
The breathing apparatus teams quickly removed the occupant of the premises where he was given immediate medical care from the fire service before a team from South Central Ambulance Service arrived. The ambulance crew were supported by a team from the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service.
Sadly the man had passed away.
The man’s death is currently being treated as unexplained but not suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
Fire Investigators and Thames Valley Police are both due to return to the house today to continue their investigations into the likely cause of the fire.
