Narrowboat saved after drop in canal level
13/07/2022
The problem was caused by paddles being left open at a lock
Fire fighters from Banbury and Deddington were called to save a narrrowboat on the Oxford canal on Tuesday, after a drop in the water level caused it to tip sidewards and start taking on water.
The boat was on a stretch of the canal passing Bodicote.
The drop in water levels was caused by the paddles on a lock being left open over a number of hours. This resulted in water escaping and the canal becoming much more shallow.
The affected narrowboat started listing on a ledge that would normally have been well below the surface. This resulted in it taking on water.
Using submersible pumps, the crews were able to pump enough water out so they and the Canal & River Trust team could refloat the boat. Environmental protection equipment was used to soak up oil which had leaked onto the surface.
