New images of Greatworth’s HS2 green tunnel revealed
07/01/2022
The tunnel will be built as 5,400 concrete precast segments in a factory in Derbyshire before being shipped to site
New images have revealed what Greatworth’s high speed rail ‘green tunnel’ will look like. The one-and-a half-mile long construction is part of the HS2 project, which will pass between Greatworth and Thorpe Madeville.
The tunnel is the longest of three which will be built across Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire. It is hoped they will help blend the rail line into the landscape and reduce disruption for local people.
The tunnel will be built as 5,400 concrete precast segments in a factory in Derbyshire before being shipped to site. Earth will be excavated before the segments are put in place. They will then be covered with the excavated soil, which will then be landscaped to fit into the surrounding countryside.
HS2 Ltd’s Project Client Rohan Perin, said: “The Greatworth green tunnel is a great example of what we’re doing to blend the new railway into the landscape and protect communities living close to the line.
“By adopting an ‘off site’ approach to manufacturing, we’re also cutting embedded carbon from the design, improving efficiency, safety and making the whole construction process less disruptive for the community.”
The Greatworth tunnel is being created on the north-east side of the village, passing beneath the Helmdon Road, Greatworth Park and Welsh Lane.
A similar structure will also be built near Chipping Warden with another also being created at Wendover in Buckinghamshire.

Sounds great – just such a pity it is probably the single biggest white elephant this country has or will ever see Billions wasted on this project when we have proven in the last 2 years people don’t need to travel to work They can do it from home and even if they had to travel the old railway had internet connections so work whilst travelling was perfectly doable Why then do they need to save 20 Mins on the journey We in this area get all the disruption and absolutely no benefit and in the mean time no one can get any building materials locally as HS 2 suck up everything from all the local suppliers creating shortages and inflation
So the fact that you are burying this huge mistake doesn’t impress anyone

Couldn’t have put it better Clive and fully agree. I (and thousands of others) are totally unimpressed with this whole farcical vanity project. It should have been scrapped years ago and the money put to greater benefit for all.
