New owners at Funeral Directors but well-known faces will stay
13/04/2022
Humphris Funerals have been in Banbury since 1880
It’s business as usual at a Banbury funeral directors despite ownership of the company changing after 140 years. The Humphris family have run Humphris Funerals since 1880.
The family are planning to continue running the business, but ownership of the company has passed to Nottingham based Funeral Partners Ltd. The new owners took control at the end of March.
Matthew Humphris is the fifth generation family member to look after Humphris Funerals. He said: “This was an opportunity to focus more on the job at hand – looking after the families – with more backup for the administrative work that’s becoming more and more of a burden for small businesses from a regulatory and compliance point of view.
“Our staff is remaining unchanged and the funeral directors won’t change. I’ll be able to do more of the job than I’ve been able to do whilst running the business as well
“From the client point of view very little should change apart from the names at the bottom of the headed paper.”
Mr Humphris will continue to run the company in Banbury, with Funeral Partners Ltd preferring bespoke arrangements for each of the funeral businesses they own.
Joseph Humphris started Humphris Funerals back in 1880, working from his front room at 74 Broughton Road. From here the business moved to a proper workshop in Queens Road. The business moved to its current premises – a former brewery – in Albert Street in 1920 under the leadership of Joseph’s son Harold.
By the 1950s Harold’s sons John and Maurice Humphris had joined the family firm, with their children Martin and Christopher entering the business in the 1980s. Christopher’s son Matthew is the most recent family member to run Humphris Funerals.

It was a shock to hear this news. But a relief to read that you were not leaving and still running the business. You have looked after my family in passing for many years. My parents. Grandparents. Husband and many family members. This town would be at a lose without you all looking after our family and friends in their passing. And also the kindness and respect you give to the family and friends that are grieving..
