New strategy for SEND children and young people

“We want children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities to receive the very best support at the right time for them”

A new strategy for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities in Oxfordshire was agreed yesterday by Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet.

The SEND strategy has been drawn up following a public consultation which solicited 866 responses.

Key aims include improving the outcomes for children with special educational needs and disabilities, developing a continuum of local provision to meet their requirements and focusing on their good physical and mental health and wellbeing.   Post-16 education, learning, employment and training opportunities are also covered, together with facilitating a positive move into adulthood.

Councillor Liz Brighouse, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Youth Services, said: “In Oxfordshire, organisations that work with children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities have a shared ambition that our county will be a place where every young person has the opportunity to become everything they want to be.

“We want children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities to receive the very best support at the right time for them. We want them to be able to access suitable education and to achieve their potential by being well prepared for a fulfilling, healthy adult life.”

Detailed plans will now be developed by Oxfordshire County Council, working with partner organisations including Oxfordshire’s NHS Clinical Commissioning Group.   The next steps will see the involvement of schools, parents, and carers with publication of the new strategy set for this June.
