New term brings new challenges for schools from Katharine House
09/09/2024
Students can support the hospice through these initiatives
With local schools now settled into the new year Katharine House Hospice is inviting them to join in with a couple of fund-raising initiatives to challenge their students.
The popular Schools Santa Run is returning towards the end of the year with pupils from nurseries and primary schools invited to don a Santa hat and complete their own sponsored run as a class or whole school event. Katharine House will provide the Santa hats.
Since the scheme was created four years ago scores of schools have taken part, so far raising around £65,000 for the hospice.
The second challenge will test youngster’s entrepreneurial skills as they are invited to try to beat their peers and other community groups and businesses in the hospice’s Accumulator Challenge. Each team will be given £50 of start-up funding by Katharine House and must then use this to generate as much money as they can.
An Accumulator Challenge awards ceremony will be held next Spring to celebrate the achievements of those involved.
Events Project Manager Helen Lerwill said: “Encouraging children and young people to raise money for our hospice doesn’t just benefit our patients and their families, it also helps pupils feel part of their community and gives them a sense of empowerment.
“Our Schools Santa Run is a simple outdoor activity which is designed to be flexible for every school to fit within their PE curriculum or as a fun extra-curricular activity for both pupils and teachers, but mostly it’s just a great way to end the term!
“And our freshly relaunched Accumulator challenge is a great way to encourage pupils to hone their entrepreneurial and fundraising skills.
“We rely heavily on the fundraising efforts of our local community, so if any schools can help us fundraise to ensure our services can continue for many years to come, we’d love to hear from them.”
