New World road race champion joins AJ Bell Women’s Tour

Having won the UCI World Championships road race in Belgium last Saturday Elisa Balsamo will be amongst the riders here next week
There’s now just five days to go until the AJ Bell Women’s Tour cycling race arrives in our area. Today its been announced that the winner of the unforgettable UCI World Championships road race in Belgium last Saturday will be amongst the riders.
Elisa Balsamo will be showing off the iconic rainbow jersey as the race starts in Bicester next Monday morning, before following a route around the county to the finish line in Banbury town centre.
Elisa is making her debut in the tour. She is famed for her sprint finish and could become the first reigning world champion to win a road stage of the race since 2016 should she triumph here next week.
Her Italian compatriots Martina Alzini, Vittoria Guazzini, Elena Pirrone and Silvia Pollicini, alongside French rider Margaux Vigie, complete the provisional Valcar – Travel & Service line-up for the race.
Elisa is the second newly-crowned world champion confirmed to be competing at the AJ Bell Women’s Tour. Ellen van Dijk (Trek – Segafredo), who won the time trial title on 20 September in Bruges, will also be in action. The race’s provisional start list will be revealed this evening (September 29).
