The Council is the latest to hike rates by the maximum allowed
The amount of Council Tax to be paid by people living in Brackley and the surrounding villages in the West Northamptonshire area has been agreed.
At a meeting held last night councillors finalised the authority’s budget and set the annual charge for households.
Next year a band D property will have to pay £1862.16, with a further £320.04 for the police and £80.39 for fire and rescue – a total of £2,262.59. Any Parish or Town Council precept is added to that.
The 4.99 percent increase is in line with the Government’s threshold and represents an average Band D increase of £88.73 a year. This generates extra funding of around £19.2m – with a proportion of that ringfenced for adult social care.
West Northamptonshire Council started its budgetary process with an anticipated shortfall of £53m. A review earlier in the year reduced the overspend to £39m, followed by a further major drive over the autumn to close the gap.
Cllr Malcolm Longley, Cabinet Member for Finance at West Northamptonshire Council, said: “Setting our budget has once again been complex and challenging given the ongoing pressures on public sector finances and the increasing demand for children’s and adults services, which account for 58p in every pound of our budget in the year ahead.
“Having identified a shortfall earlier this year we took a planned and prudent approach to reduce this, whilst always ensuring the needs of our communities remained at the forefront of all decisions and actions we made.”
