Six finalists were assessed with The Butchers Arms named the overall winner

The Butchers Arms in Balscote has been named the Pub of the Year 2023, as judged by North Oxon CAMRA branch members.    They beat off five other finalists from across the area, which had received the highest average marks throughout the last year.

Members of CAMRA – the campaign for real ale – judged the pubs on beer quality, the choice available and the knowledge that staff have of those beers.

The Butchers Arms has been a Hook Norton Pub since 1878.   It’s a Grade II listed building and still has an original ice house in the garden.

A local CAMRA spokesperson said: “The judges received a friendly welcome and a great pint of beer in all of the shortlisted pubs, but The Butchers Arms was the winner this year.”

The five other finalists were the Coach and Horses in Adderbury, the Duke at Clifton, the Red Lion Inn in Deddington, the White Lion in Fewcott and the Peyton Arms in Stoke Lyne.
