To balance the books Cherwell is proposing changes to bin collections and the maximum Council Tax increase allowed
There’s just a week left to have your say on Cherwell District Council’s budget proposals for next financial year. A consultation closes next Friday (December 19) .
The council is facing a significant financial test in 2026-27 and so is proposing £1.785m in new efficiency savings to balance the books whilst protecting frontline services.
Amongst the proposals to bridge the gap green general waste bins could be collected every third week instead of fortnightly, urban grass verges could be cut less frequently and the price of the garden waste service increased.
The authority is also asking for the maximum Council Tax increase allowed – £5 for a Band D property.
Councillor David Hingley, Leader of the Council, said: “Months of thorough planning have gone into preparing our budget proposals. Like councils up and down the country, we are navigating increasing demands for our services while the funding we receive from government does not keep pace with the cost of delivering them.
“This council is committed to sound financial management that helps shield frontline services from unwanted cuts. We will carefully read through everyone’s feedback before finalising our plans. So I urge residents, businesses and partner organisations to take part in our consultation and respond to the budget proposals before 19 December.”
The final decision on next year’s budget is expected at the full council meeting on February 23 next year.
