Easington Sports’ plans could see Banbury represented in the Oxfordshire Over 50s League for the first time

The success of an Over 50s Football taster session at Easington Sports Football Club has led to plans for the introduction of regular sessions and the hope of creating a team for the 2022/23 season, starting this September.

A number of new players, most of whom had not played any football for years, came together for the first taster last year.  Another session has now been arranged for Sunday 23rd January 2022, starting at 10am at Addison Road.

Jamie Hunter from Easington Sports said: “We are hoping to arrange some friendly games in the spring and I’d imagine more regular weekly training will start around then too.”

The Oxfordshire Over 50s League is a traditional 11-a-side male league which has 13 teams spread across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. There is currently no team from Banbury or the surrounding area in the league.

The players in the league are predominantly over 50, but teams can have three players aged 45-49 on the pitch at any one time to help with numbers.  Games are 90 minutes and mainly played twice a month on a Sunday afternoon, although the league is flexible with when fixtures can take place. The season runs from September to May.

Michael Thurlow, Football Development Manager at Oxfordshire FA said “I am excited at the prospect of seeing over 50s football come to Banbury as this is where we have a gap in the county.

“It was fantastic to see so many individuals enjoying themselves playing football again – one said he hadn’t played for around 30 years, which shows it is never too late to pick your boots up again! We want to encourage people in the area to come along and give it a go!”

Anyone from the Banbury area who is looking to get back into football, aged over 45, is invited to register their interest by contacting Jamie Hunter using the email address easingtonsports@hotmail.com.
