Overturned lorry shuts M40
07/06/2024
The closure is expected to be “protracted”
Drivers have faced long delays due to a closure affecting a stretch of the M40. An overturned heavy goods blocked the motorway between Junction 9 at Bicester to Junction 10 at Ardley with the Highways Agency reporting the problem a little after 5am.
Initially both carriageways were closed to assist the emergency services dealing with the situation. By 8am two lanes on the southbound side had been reopened. The northbound carriageway is expected to remain closed for some time.
The lorry was transporting sausages which have been shed across the carriageway.
Fire crews from Bicester, Kidlington and Rewley Road attended the incident. They reported that nobody had been seriously injured and the lorry driver was in the care of South Central Ambulance Service.
The Highways Agency has warned that recovery, barrier repairs and a carriageway clean up are yet to take place with the closures expected to be “protracted.”
Roads in the wider area have been very busy as drivers sought alternative routes.
