Oxford’s congestion charge goes live on Wednesday

28/10/2025

Those visiting the city need to be aware of the new rules

Visitors to Oxford are being reminded a new temporary congestion charge scheme launches in the city tomorrow (Wednesday).

Six roads will have ANPR cameras operating, noting the number plates of vehicles passing them.   A charge of £5 per day must be paid, unless the driver has a permit.

Whilst penalty charge notices will be issued for those who haven’t paid, or who don’t have a permit, during the initial six weeks of the charge the council will instead send a warning letter the first time the rules are breached.

The County Council says the interim scheme will contribute towards creating a healthier, more accessible and attractive city, and improve bus services.

The roads affected are Marston Ferry Road and Hollow Way (Monday to Saturday between 7am to 9am and 3pm to 6pm) and Hythe Bridge Street, St Cross Road, St Clement’s Street and Thames Street, daily from 7am to 7pm.

During the initial period of the congestion charge free bus travel into the city is being made available to those using the Oxford’s park and ride sites.
