Patriotic rug being raffled ahead of the Jubilee
05/05/2022
The Orinoco team created the eye catching item from materials that would have been thrown away
A patriotic rug, made entirely from scrap items, has been created by the clever team at Orinoco, the Oxfordshire Scrapstore. The eye-catching creation is now being raffled with the winner being announced just before the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend.
The team of five who worked on the colourful item think it would make a fantastic picnic rug for people to use during The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend. It could also be hung on a wall or used as a quilt for a single bed.
The rug has been made entirely from scrap items that would have otherwise been thrown away. In addition to public donations, materials were donated by a Banbury business that was closing and an upholstery company in Oxford.
Store Manager Lisa Hawtin said: “One of the volunteers, Maureen, had already made a quilt which sold the same day it went on display. I then had the bright idea to do a red, white and blue one – and then the even brighter idea to do a Union Jack!
“I offered to do the Union Jack part not comprehending how difficult it actually is. It took me a couple of days to get the angles right. I did my research!”
The project involved several days hard work by Lisa, and her volunteers Maureen, Yvonne, Sandra and Sharon. Fuelled by chocolate and a determination to complete the project, despite issues with the thickness of the material causing a couple of sewing machine problems, the team did enjoy the project and are proud of the result.
Raffle tickets to win the rug cost £2 each with every ticket winning something from a box of gifts, as well as getting their entry into the main raffle. That is due to take place on June 1, just ahead of the Jubilee celebrations.
Based on Banbury’s High Street, Orinoco, the Oxfordshire Scrapstore, is an independent charity that collects unwanted, good-quality, commercial and domestic objects from businesses and householders. It is open between 10am and 4pm from Tuesday to Saturday.
