Potential changes at waste and recycling centres

What could be done differently to modernise the service and improve efficiency?
Oxfordshire’s Household Waste and Recycling Centres, including our local one at Alkerton, could have their opening hours reduced and be closed completely on their quietest days as part of a number of ideas being considered by the county council.
Local people are being asked for their views on how to modernise the service and improve efficiency, along with submitting ideas for what could be done differently.
There are currently seven centres in Oxfordshire and there are no plans to reduce this number.
The option of opening shops to sell some of the used items that have been taken to the centres is being considered. This could give a new lease of life to items such as bikes, clothes, furniture and sports equipment.
A consultation is now underway with views sought in areas such as whether recyclable and non-recyclable waste should be sorted on or off site, whether access should be limited to Oxfordshire residents and restricting the types of vehicles and trailers that can access the sites, with the aim of reducing the amount of waste illegally brought in.
Councillor Judy Roberts, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Place, Environment and Climate Action, said: “We want to hear from as many people as possible about how and when they visit our HWRCs, what works for them and what could be done differently.
“These views will help shape our strategy for dealing with household waste in future years, so we would urge people to take part in the consultation – whether they use the centres regularly, occasionally, or even if they don’t currently.
“Our residents regularly top the national tables when it comes to recycling, but to maintain this and to contain costs we are always looking at ways of reducing the amount of residual waste that is created.”
The consultation can be accessed here.
A new booking system for accessing the Household Waste and Recycling Centres was agreed last year, but that has yet to come into operation.
