Preparatory work to give road access to Station via Tramway begins

Construction work is scheduled for early 2024

Preparatory work for a major project to open up a new route into Banbury railway station via Tramway has started.

The aim is to improve access to the station and cut the number of trips taken using the heavily congested junction between Cherwell Street and Bridge Street.   The plan also hopes to improve bus journey reliability into the centre of Banbury from the southern side of town.

The latest version of the plan shows access for vehicles to the old (eastern) station car park, together with Station Approach businesses and Banbury United FC via Tramway.   Traffic from Bridge Street would not be allowed any further than the train station, although taxis and buses would be able to pass through a controlled area to gain access to the industrial estate and Tramway.

A consultation on the proposals closed in December.

The project involves road widening, a new roundabout and new multiway signalled junction.

In preparation for the final design stages of the project trial holes are being dug to investigate the ground conditions, locate utility cables and inform the design of the improvements.   The holes will be dug in several places along Station Approach and Tramway Road.

The work will take place during weekdays between 7.30am to 5pm and will last for four to five weeks.  Access along Station Approach Road will be maintained, but people are asked to be patient and follow all signals and signage.

Construction is scheduled to take place early in 2024.
