Prepare for pain before train station access gain
22/10/2024
Work on the nearly £16m station access project begins on Thursday
Some main routes in Banbury town centre are likely to suffer severe delays over the next few months as major work to improve access to Banbury Train Station begins. The nearly £16m project will see a new route built linking Tramway Road with Station Approach. Work will begin this Thursday.
When completed commuters will benefit from new bus stops, cycleways and footways and its hoped the changes will also reduce traffic at the Bridge Street junction.
But until then a number of restrictions and diversions are coming into force whilst work is underway. Bridge Street will be directly affected with an increased volume of traffic as other station access points are closed.
From Thursday pedestrians, cyclists and those being dropped off by car will no longer be able to cut through from Tramway, instead needing to use the entrance off Bridge Street. On Station Approach temporary lights will be in place to control traffic flow.
The west station car park will be fully closed from next Monday (October 28), with all drivers needing to park at the east side multistorey car park instead.
Construction work is expected to finish in September 2025.
Councillor Judy Roberts, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Development Strategy, said: “If you use the train station, or travel along Tramway Road, please take a moment to plan ahead to avoid delays while we construct these very welcome improvements. Follow all signs and diversion routes for your own safety.
“Please bear with us while we construct these improvements. When finished, the new route will make it easier to access the station and improve journey times for buses, taxis, pedestrians, and cyclists, particularly those travelling from southern Banbury and Banbury town centre.”
At the same time Chiltern Railways will also be upgrading parts of the station by installing new toilets, carrying out a repaint of the station and opening a Costa Coffee and customer seating area.
Michael Stewart, Commercial and Customer Strategy Director at Chiltern Railways, said: “The works by Oxfordshire Country Council will significantly improve access along Tramway Road to Banbury station. I appreciate that this will cause some disruption to our customers, and I thank them for their patience as the works are being carried out.”
