The build project has been completed in around 10 weeks
Banbury’s second PlayZone opened on Friday.
The state-of-the-art sports facility in Princess Diana Park has been created through a partnership between the Football Foundation, Cherwell District Council and Banbury Town Council.
The PlayZone offers a safe, inclusive and welcoming space for residents and sports teams to come together, practice and socialise. Its been completed on time and on-budget after the initial ground-breaking took place around 10 weeks ago.
Those behind the project aimed to have the facility up and running before Half Term – next week.
The PlayZone’s features include a durable 3G artificial grass surface, long-lasting panelling and bright LED lighting, making it suitable for year-round use.
A programme of dedicated football sessions for women and girls will be held at the new PlayZone, delivered by Oxford United in the Community, Banbury United FC, Banbury Irish FC, The Hill Community Centre, and The Sunrise Multicultural Project.
Three-quarters of the £254,000 cost of the project came from a Football Foundation grant, with the remainder of the cash provided by Cherwell from some of the money developers have to pay when building new housing developments.
Councillor Mark Cherry was one of those at Friday’s official opening. He said: “As a local Ruscote Councillor who lived on Bretch Hill estate since 1976, it’s great to see a sports facility provided by Cherwell District Council and Banbury Town Council that will be used by the local community.
“Banbury Town Council is eager to take on the care and maintenance of this PlayZone and anticipate it will provide a first-class environment in which young people from all walks of life can develop their sporting skills.”
