Proposed increase to councillors’ allowances

An independent panel is suggesting allowances should increase in line with the staff pay rise

Cherwell District Councillors will next week decide whether to accept an Independent Remuneration Panel recommendation of a 3.5 percent increase in their allowances.

This would lift the basic councillor’s allowance by £180 to £5,220.

The increase is in in line with the 2025/2026 staff pay award.

Those taking on additional responsibility will get an uplift to the money available to them in addition to the basic allowance.   Leader of the Council, David Hingley, would able to claim an extra £16,596 each year – an increase of £564.

The Independent Remuneration Panel is, however, recommending that the amount available for childcare remains at £10 per hour and dependent relative care at £20 per hour.   Mileage rates are also proposed to remain unchanged.

Councillors will vote on whether to accept the proposals at a meeting next week.   Even if passed there is no obligation on them to take the allowances unless they need to.
