Protestors to target Morrisons over “Frankenchickens”
29/04/2022
The supermarket is accused of treating chickens in a very different way to how it is portrayed in their advertising
Animal rights activists will be protesting outside Banbury’s Morrisons store tomorrow as they campaign to get the supermarket to sign-up to a commitment to better welfare for the chickens they sell.
Morrisons is accused of selling what protestors describe as “FrankenChickens” – birds that have been engineered to grow unnaturally big in a short period of time. This can result in the animal collapsing under its own weight and suffering other health problems and deformities.
Animal protection charities Open Cages and The Humane League UK have persuaded over 250 companies to sign up to the Better Chicken Commitment – a pledge not to sell birds bred in this way – but they say Morrisons won’t agree to the commitment.
Rachel Grant is a Senior Lecturer in Biology (Animal Welfare) at London South Bank University. She is leading tomorrow’s protest in Banbury.
Rachel said: “Morrisons have a lot of adverts showing very idyllic welfare scenarios which is far from the truth. Open Cages has gone into Morrison’s farms and seen the true situation so we feel they’re not being transparent about what’s happening.”
Protests will take place at Morrisons stores across the UK. In Banbury the organisers are inviting local people to join then outside the store between 11.30am and 1pm. The protest will be held in respectful silence, although shoppers will be able to speak to those involved and receive information with more details.
Banbury FM has approached Morrisons and offered them the opportunity to comment on the issue.
