Refuse collector proves he’s a real life hero

Dave Young jumped into action and administered first aid after seeing a lady fall over, hitting her head
A Banbury refuse collector has been thanked after jumping into action when he spotted a resident in need of first aid.
Dave Young was undertaking collections on his usual round in town when he noticed a lady fall over in her back garden, hitting her head and cutting her nose.
Mr Young went to check on the lady, Pam Williams, administered first aid to stop the bleeding and helped her back into her house. He then made her comfortable while calling her daughter and an ambulance.
Mr Young, who works for Cherwell District Council, stayed with Mrs Williams until her daughter arrived and she was feeling better.
Following the incident on January 26, Mrs Williams wanted to thank the man who she described as a “real life hero”, so she contacted Mr Young’s manager with a thank you note and the box of suitably named Heroes chocolates.
Mr Young is a former member of the armed forces who joined the council near the start of the pandemic. Along with the rest of his crew, he will typically cover around 20 miles a day travelling around the district and emptying bins.
As a member of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, Cherwell District Council guarantees job interviews to suitably qualified veterans who have recently left the armed forces and want to work for them.
