Resident doctors begin industrial action
25/07/2025

Unless you have been told your appointment has been cancelled please attend as planned
Resident doctors – including those at the Horton General Hospital and hospitals in Oxford – started industrial action at 7am this morning.
The British Medical Association says, despite a promised increase in August, resident doctors’ pay has been eroded since 2008 and they want it brought back into line. But the government says after delivering two years in a row of the highest pay increases across the public sector it can’t move on pay for resident doctors.
The action will continue until 7am on Wednesday and is part of an ongoing dispute between resident doctors and the government.
During the action disruption is expected to patient appointments and waiting times at the Emergency Department.
The Oxford University Hospital Trust says some appointments may have to be rescheduled with the priority keeping patients in hospital safe. However, anyone who has an appointment who hasn’t heard from the Trust should attend the procedure or appointment as planned.
Felicity Taylor-Drewe, Chief Operating Officer at OUH, said: “As always, our top priority during this planned industrial action is ensuring patient safety while maintaining the highest standard of care.
“We are committed to keeping disruption to a minimum, and we have measures in place to ensure the safety and welfare of our patients and our staff.
“We will prioritise patients who are in need of emergency care. It is important that patients requiring urgent medical care continue to seek help as usual, especially in emergencies and life-threatening situations.
“If your condition is less serious, you will likely face long waits or be directed to other services such as your local pharmacy, Minor Injuries Unit, or GP. If you don’t know where to get support, contact NHS 111 who can provide advice and direct you to the best place for the care you need.”
