The well known local businessman took charge at Banbury United’s AGM on Thursday

A popular Banbury businessman is back in charge at Banbury United.   Ronnie Johnson was elected as the club’s Chairman at its Annual General Meeting last night.

Mr Johnson previously held the role from August 2015 as the first Chairman when Banbury United became a fan owned club.   He oversaw large reforms at Banbury United and the Puritans regaining their Southern League Premier status.   Work commitments forced him to stand down in 2017.

In August the following year he took on the role of Club Ambassador with the aim of promoting and enhancing the image and standing of the fan owned club.

On taking his second tenure as Chairman Mr Johnson said: “After four years I am proud to be back at the helm of the Puritans and hopefully will bring my natural enthusiasm to the role.

“I welcome the new governance board and feel that the mix of old guard and new blood will bring further business acumen and strategic knowledge required to push forward in the new season and beyond.

“I have come forward to lead the club into this new era and the challenge of step two football and be assured it will be an exciting challenge. As a fan owned club the members are the owners and I will endeavour along with the new board to ensure we are transparent and democratic throughout.

“It will not always be a smooth road ahead but we must remember to ensure ‘We Are United!’”

The appointment of Mr Johnson as Chairman has gone down well with Banbury United supporters.   One with the Twitter name ‘Townend Reds’ wrote: “Absolutely brilliant news to have Ronnie Johnson back as chairman.  A proper football and Banbury man, and a real leader who will actually engage with supporters.

“Extremely positive move and one we can all get behind.   Welcome back Ronnie.”

At last night’s AGM Banbury United’s members elected six people to the recently agreed new structure of a board of six to oversee the strategic development of the club.   Joining Mr Johnson are Paul Duester (Treasurer), Stephen Barlow (Secretary), Martin Cantrell, Lisa Dixon and Dave Goulding.
