Runners heading to Banbury for 15 mile road race
18/03/2022
A popular road race organised by Banbury Harriers Athletics Club sets off from Spiceball Park on Sunday
Runners from across the country will be heading to Banbury this weekend for Geoff Smith’s Banbury 15 Mile Road Race. The popular event will set off from Spiceball Park on Sunday morning after an enforced year off last year due to the pandemic.
The race is organised by Banbury Harriers Athletics Club. After leaving the park, runners will use the town’s pavements to head northwards out of Banbury on the Southam Road towards The Bourtons. From here the rural road route takes in Cropredy, Appletree and Claydon before looping back to Banbury and the finish line in Spiceball Park.
The Banbury 15 is named after former Banbury Harrier athlete Geoff Smith who died in 2015. The race was Mr Smith’s brainchild.
In 2020 Mr Smith’s son Sullivan was first through the winners tape in 1hr 24mins 28secs. Just under 250 runners took part including 80 ladies.
For those wanting something a little less challenging the Paul Bithell memorial fun run has a choice of 1 or 2 miles on a route around Spiceball Park. The fun run is named after a former editor of the Banbury Guardian newspaper.
The Geoff Smith’s Banbury 15 Mile Road Race will set off at 10.30am and the Paul Bithell memorial fun run around ten minutes later.
