Scheme for those struggling to pay Council Tax set to be retained
29/07/2022
Council Tax Reduction has been available in the Cherwell District since 2013
As the cost-of-living crisis bites, those struggling to pay their Council Tax should continue to be offered a lifeline through a local financial support scheme.
Council Tax Reduction has been available in the Cherwell District since 2013 for those on a low income, who claim certain benefits and do not have more than £16,000 in capital. Cherwell’s Budget Planning Committee has recommended to the Council’s Executive that the scheme is retained in its current form next year.
During the peak of the pandemic, in June 2021, 6,743 people were making use of the scheme. That number fell to 6,292 by June this year, with the reduction attributed to people returning to work.
The report to Councillors said: “There is still a lot of financial uncertainty for many customers and in the current financial climate with the ongoing cost of living crisis it is … recommended that the existing scheme should be retained for 2023/24.”
