Secondary schools allocated for September’s year 7 entrants

Most children will be heading to their first choice for secondary education

Today is National offer day for secondary school places.  

In Oxfordshire 6,492 children will be heading to their first choice of school for the new year from September.   This gives the County Council an 88.24 per cent success rate in placing year 7 entrants.

The figure is lower in West Northamptonshire where just over three-quarters (76 per cent) of children will be heading to their first-choice school – some 3,682 children.

In Oxfordshire 7,354 children will be making the move to secondary school after the summer holiday.   Only 280 of them couldn’t be placed in one of their first four choices for secondary education.

Councillor John Howson, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Young People’s Services, said: “We aim to give all children the best start in life and educational and learning opportunities are fundamental to this.

 “It’s a big step moving from primary to secondary schools, often from a small school to a very much larger setting. So, I’m delighted that we have been able to offer the majority of applicants their first choice of school.”

West Northamptonshire Council needed to find year 7 places for around 4845 children.   95 per cent these were secured at one of the three preferred schools that had been selected.

Councillor Fiona Baker, West Northamptonshire’s Cabinet Member for children, families, and education said: “Secondary school is the start of the next step in a young person’s education journey and will help with their development to adulthood. Their years at secondary school will provide them with a wealth of new experiences, skills and knowledge so it is great to see that 95% of applications have been allocated a place at one of their three preferred schools.”
