Slay Official flying to Portugal to represent Team England
27/06/2023
The Banbury youngsters will represent their country in eight categories
A team of young dancers from a Banbury Dance School will be flying the flag for England over the next few days, representing their country at the Dance World Cup in Portugal.
Known as Slay Official, the twenty dancers all belong to The School for Stars, based in Castle Quay shopping centre. Some of the team have flown out today, with the rest of Slay Official joining them over the next couple of days.
Early this year the dancers, who are aged from 7 to 12 years, submitted videos of their routines for the UK qualifiers. They were successful with eight routines, five of which will be performed as a team, one as a duet, and two as solo performances.
At the Dance World Cup they will compete alongside 7,500 dancers from 53 counties.
An opening ceremony will be held on Friday, during which Slay Official will parade into the event carrying their flag. The competition will then run over the following few days.
Tee Lilly is one of the head dance principals who will be with the team in Portugal.
She said: “They’re so excited. They’ve worked so hard past few months to get there and I think they’re super excited.
“For some of the children it’s their first time going abroad as well, just to be there with their teammates and showing all their hard work from the past few months.
“Some of the categories have got around 60 entries in, so it’s a huge competition.
“We just hope they have fun and enjoy the experience and gets meet dancers, and watch dancers, from all over the world.”
