Students showcase their cultural heritage during Black History Month celebrations
27/10/2022
Young people spent a month planning for a special day before the half term break
Black African and Caribbean students at Wykham Park Academy in Banbury showcased their cultural heritage and shared their stories, as the school concluded their Black History Month celebrations.
Following weeks of preparations, the final day of the half term saw pupils enjoy giving their taste buds and ears the chance to sample new dishes and sounds.
Students promoted the event displaying posters around the school, alongside artwork which had been created during lessons. There were also features on national flags, celebrities and artists.
On the day, students made dishes for their peers to try, a special playlist of music was created and there was also a chance to take part in a quiz about black scientists. A pledge regarding Black Lives Matter was signed.
Assistant Principal at Wykham Park Academy, Carine Foster said: “We wanted Black History Month this year to be a chance for our students to show and share what matters to them.
“The planning for the day of celebration, which took place on the last day of term, started at the beginning of the month with students meeting every lunchtime to discuss what they wanted to do and how they planned to execute their ideas.
“The event was a success and proved to be the perfect opportunity for our students to share laughter, friendship, food and music.”
Within the school there is also now a greater emphasis on promoting diversity and inclusivity through the curriculum. History lessons offered to key stage 3 students now include the experiences of black people in Tudor England, looking at the Black Lives Matter protests and the experience of the LGBTQ+ community throughout history.
Other subjects include looking at the influence of the British Empire and a focus on the Windrush generation.
A Pride Club for everyone, whether they are LGBTQ+ or an ally, is now a permanent fixture.
