Theatre Collective hoping to use Clinton’s old shop unit

A decision on a change of use planning application is due in May

A new use is being proposed for an empty unit at Banbury’s Castle Quay shopping centre, as a local arts charity looks to create a permanent creative space in the town.

A planning application has been submitted to change the use of the former Clinton’s Cards store, with The People’s Theatre Collective set to take over the premises.

The Banbury-based charity works with children and young people through theatre productions, workshops and creative arts projects, aiming to provide a safe and inclusive environment for participants to develop skills and confidence.

If approved, the new space would become a dedicated “creative home” for young people, hosting workshops, performances and drop-in arts sessions. The organisation has previously trialled activities in vacant units at Castle Quay and is now looking to establish a more permanent base.

As part of The Big Give campaign £6,600 was raised towards the cost of transforming the unit at Castle Quay, with that amount set to be matched by donors through the scheme.

Founded in 2004 (originally as Cherwell Theatre Company), the group has grown to work with a wide range of young people across the Banbury area, including those facing barriers to accessing the arts.

The application comes as part of wider efforts to bring new uses into empty retail units in the centre.

A decision on the proposal will be made by Cherwell District Council in May.
