Riders and charities came together at Broughton Castle on Wednesday evening
July’s popular Broughton Castle Sportive cycling event raised £6,100 for local charities this year. A presentation night for the event was held at the castle last night (Wednesday).
Trophies were handed out to the fastest teams on the 100, 75 and 50 mile routes.
89 riders cycled the 100 mile route out to the Cotswolds, which includes a number of challenging climbs. The Broughton Castle Trophy was presented by Martin Fiennes to a team from V C Jericho cycling club in Oxford – who are previous winners of the award.
The 75 mile route was attempted by 61 riders, with team ABR Econnect247 returning in the fastest time and receiving the Rotary Challenge Trophy.
Wellesbourne Wheelers once again won the Presidents Cup for the 50 mile route – the fifth year the team have taken the trophy. They were amongst 104 people cycling this route.
Although 486 people had signed up for the Sportive the appalling weather on the morning of the event reduced the number of starters to 325, who between them cycled 20,260 miles.
The Sportive is organised by the Rotary Club of Banbury Cherwell. The contributions from 10 sponsors covered the event’s running costs, leaving all entry fees to be donated in their entirety to 11 local charities.
Those receiving funds this year had been involved in the event. They included 1st Grimsbury Scouts, Katharine House Hospice, Cherwell Division Guides, The Let’s Play Project, Friends of Agnes Court, Dogs For Good, Radio Horton, Banbury Rotary Club, Stour Valley Lions Club, Blood Bikes and Oxfordshire Raynet.
The president of the Rotary Club of Banbury Cherwell, Philip Brody, said: “As a club of 13 people, we couldn’t do it with just us. Having the assistance of the charities, who then share in the funds that we raise is just amazing.
“One of the charities just told me it is the equivalent to spending several days standing outside a supermarket, shaking a tin. It makes a huge difference. We heard [this evening] from the Friends of Agnes Court of some of the things they’re able to do with the money that we raise for them, which improves the quality of life for the people living at Cheshire Homes Agnes Court.”
A total of £96,267 has been raised by the Broughton Castle Sportive since its inception.
