15/07/2022
Man tried to escape Edmunds Road property where cannabis plants were being grown
A man who was trafficked into the UK has been given a suspended prison sentence for drugs offences after he was caught at a cannabis farm in a property in Edmunds Road, Banbury.
The court was told that 30-year-old Matao Dadaj was a victim of modern slavery.
Officers executed a Misuse of Drugs Act at the property on May 12. As officers entered, Dedaj was attempting to escape via the conservatory.
Inside the property a large quantity of drugs was located, along with empty plant pots.
Dedaj, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to one count each of possession with intent to supply a controlled class B drug (cannabis), possession of a class A drug (cocaine) and cultivation of cannabis, a class B drug.
At Oxford Crown Court on Friday (July 15) he was sentenced to one year and three months, suspended for 18 months.
Investigating officer, PC David Scott, said: “I welcome today’s sentence for the offences Dedaj pleaded guilty to.
“It was cited in court today that Dedaj was trafficked into the United Kingdom illegally and was a victim of modern slavery.
“Thames Valley Police is committed through Stronghold to working with partners such as international police forces and others to target those who involve themselves in serious and organised crime which is a blight on our communities.
“We would advise anyone who believes they are being forced to commit immigration crimes or perhaps even forced into modern slavery to please report it to us.
“If you think you are a victim please call 101, or you can report online on our website.
“There is further information on our website about immigration crime and modern slavery including information about other support agencies that victims can contact.”
